The Geographical Place Names Board (the Board) was formed in 1987 under the authority of the then Secretary for Lands and Works. The Board is responsible for overseeing the proper adoption of correct place names in both English and Chinese. Membership of the Board consists of representatives from the concerned departments including Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Home Affairs Department, Hongkong Post, Information Services Department, Lands Department, Marine Department, Rating and Valuation Department, and Official Languages Division of Civil Service Bureau.

Lands Department supports the Board to process place naming applications including coordinating views from the Board's members, liaising with other concerned parties, conducting field verification and providing the survey and mapping information as necessary. Lands Department is also responsible for the maintenance of accurate records of geographical place names for the whole territory. The adopted place names are recorded in the Place Name Gazetteer and are shown on maps published by Lands Department.
