Hong Kong Guide 2005 (Photomap Edition)
Following the success of the first Photomap Edition of the Hong Kong Guide last year, the Survey and Mapping Office (SMO) of the Lands Department has now published the next edition, i.e. Hong Kong Guide 2005.
In response to the comment from readers that the limited number of conventional line maps in last year's edition was not enough for cross reference with the photomaps, the SMO has increased the number of large scale conventional line maps in the Hong Kong Guide 2005 to 145 pages, the same number as the photomaps. Readers can have a bird’s eye view of the landscape from the photomap and then obtain detailed geographic information from the corresponding conventional line map.
As more than a hundred pages of conventional line maps are added to the Hong Kong Guide 2005, the indexes have been simplified to retain the major information. Notwithstanding, there are still more than 10,000 entries of names of places, streets, estates and buildings, declared monuments as well as public transport information.
To make the Hong Kong Guide more informative, SMO has compiled a separate booklet entitled 'Names of Hong Kong Places, Streets and Buildings' which comprises 192 pages of about 40,000 names of places, streets, buildings and community facilities, etc. together with their grid references on the guidebook. The booklet is available in bundle with the Hong Kong Guide 2005. Readers can purchase only the Hong Kong Guide 2005 without the booklet or the Bundle Version with booklet.
The new edition has also for the first time included detailed information of Hong Kong's Strategic Routes with a Strategic Route Map and individual Route Diagrams showing exit numbers and their associated designations along the routes.
Another special feature is the introduction of rock forms in Hong Kong. Beautiful photographs of interesting and unique rocks from various parts of the territory are embedded into the conventional line map pages with grid reference to help readers locate them.
The 408-page Hong Kong Guide 2005 (Photomap Edition) and its Bundle Version are now available for sale at all SMO's map sales counters and designated post offices at $100 and $120 respectively. They are also available at some bookstores and Online Government Bookstore at the web site of ESDlife.
