Metadata is the information about data which helps the prospective users to decide what data is available, how good the data is and where to obtain the data. To facilitate data-mining and sharing digital geographic data (DGD) amongst government departments and other interested parties, a metadata catalogue is set up at the Land Information Centre. The catalogue contains the metadata of the DGD from the departments of the Development Bureau (DEVB) and Transport and Housing Bureau (THB).
Public can also search the metadata for his required DGD through geospatial data clearinghouse gateways. The metadata from all worldwide clearinghouse nodes are searched according to the given title, theme keywords or geographical location. The search results together with the metadata would be returned to the users who can determine whether the data are suitable for their specific purposes. Geospatial Data Clearinghouse established by U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee is a typical clearinghouse. This Centre is developing a website for public and government department users to search the metadata of DGD kept in the metadata catalogue.
