GIS Projects Section

The GIS Project Section is responsible for implementing Geographic Information System (GIS) related projects in meeting the increasing demand and application of geographical and spatial information by the community and government departments. The following major projects have been implemented by the GIS Projects Section:

  1. Metadata Catalogue System (MCS)

The Metadata Catalogue System is a repository of the metadata of the Digital Geospatial Data (DGD) owned by the government departments who took part in the Data Alignment Measures (DAM) of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR. Under the custody of the Land Information Centre, the Metadata Catalogue System provides web access functions for viewing the DGD metadata online. All metadata provided are conforming to the US Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Please visit the MCS website at www.hkmapmeta.gov.hk for details.

  2. Data Dissemination System (DDS)

There are two phases of the Data Dissemination System project. The first phase was to set up an internal system to collect, integrate and align three types of geospatial data, including buildings, land lots and road centre lines, defined under the Data Alignment Measures (DAM). The aligned data are then disseminated through the DDS in the form of Common Spatial Units (CSU) for shared use by the participating government departments in order to support their daily works. The first phase DDS has been in operation since February 2007.

The second phase DDS project was to set up a round-the-clock digital map products sale and support services system for use by the general public and government departments. The "Hong Kong Map Service" website (www.hkmapservice.gov.hk)launched by Lands Department in September 2010 is the Internet service platform of the system. Using the service, users can search, order and download digital map products, and settle their accounts by e-payment methods online. Comparing to the conventional means, "Hong Kong Map Service" has largely improved the efficiency in serving the public.

The DDS will continue to improve its services and expand its product types, such as 3D spatial data and paper map products, with a view to meeting the community's needs.

  3. GeoInfo Map

To cater the public's need for convenient access to official digital maps and geospatial information, LandsD has developed and implemented an Internet service called GeoInfo Map (www.map.gov.hk) for access by the public. GeoInfo Map integrates useful public facility information of different government departments, for example, declared monuments, mobile network coverage in country parks, locations of hiking trails, cultural and sports facilities, schools, libraries and hospitals, etc. With GeoInfo Map, users can efficiently search for the locations of different community facilities in Hong Kong.

  4. GeoMobile Map

GeoMobile Map (www.map.gov.hk/mobile) is a new public service launched by the Lands Department in June 2011. It is a mapping and geographic information service tailored for smartphones and mobile devices running iOS and Android. This new service allows users to view more detailed government maps or search for community facilities while on the move.
