The Map Information Section comprises two Map Publications Centres, a Map and Aerial Photo Library, a POS Support Unit, and a Headquarters & Special Duties Unit. The Section is responsible for supplying paper maps and aerial photos to government departments, handling public sale of digital/paper maps and aerial photos, and advising on the use of such maps and photos. It maintains archives of all SMO maps and aerial photos, provides mapping information, issues copyright licences, coordinates street naming and undertakes the production of territory-wide plans for client departments and the Geographical Place Names Board. The section also manages the POS System among sales outlets in SMO.
Map Publications Centres
Map Publications Centre, Hong Kong and Map Publications Centre, Kowloon are the two main sales outlets of paper maps published by SMO as well as other maps such as geological maps and town planning plans published by other government departments. As the headquarters for map sales services, Map Publications Centre, Hong Kong coordinates the map sales in other outlets such as District Survey Offices. Besides, the Centre is responsible for issuing maps and coordinating the provision of reprographic services to government departments.
Map and Aerial Photo Library
The Map and Aerial Photo Library maintains archives over 40,000 maps and 220,000 aerial photos, the majority of which are produced by SMO or its predecessors. Among the collection, the oldest survey plans date back to 1922 and the oldest aerial photos 1924. Members of the public are welcome to visit the Library to search for the items they want and order for reproduction. A computerized Map Archives Retrieval System (MARS) is being used in the Library and sales outlets in SMO. Users can search and identify the maps and aerial photos on the system more quickly and easily.
